    Hi all

    I've got an interesting project coming up and obviously want to use the mighty Modx for it. The scenario is that around various areas of the city I live in there is a local news publication. They have approached me to create a website for each individual area. So there would be;

    areaonemagazine.co.uk
    areatwomagazine.co.uk
    areathreemagazine.co.uk

    and so on. The ultimate idea is that, when they have 5 or 6 of these set up they should be able to combine the best stories from each area into an over-arching website that caters for the whole city. I.e. citymagazine.co.uk

    Now I am sure that Modx is set up to do this (from what I have read) and understand that I can use contexts to create multiple websites on one install. What I don't know (and would love some guidance from the community) is;

    • Is it possible to pull resources from sub-sites/contexts into one parent website?
    • Can each sub website (they will be managed by different people) have (or appear to have) its own manager area with its own images folder (for example)?
    • Is there a really good tutorial out there to get me started or is it time I bought Bob's book from Amazon (assuming it is available in the UK)?

    Any initial thoughts, guidance, warnings etc. would be very much appreciated before I just dive right in and screw it up.

    Thanks folks

      Someone else can answer the other questions, but I'll address one.

      Is there a really good tutorial out there to get me started or is it time I bought Bob's book from Amazon (assuming it is available in the UK)?

      Run through fire and devastate villages if needed to acquire Bob's book. If there's one thing you can't go wrong with, it's reading and having for your very own... what I affectionately call the BOG (Bob's Official Guide).

      Working through security/permissions and ACL's on a test site will also be helpful. Start with the documentation for security here http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Security

      And of course all the security documentation/tutorials, at Bob's Guides.

          Amazon doesn't do PayPal. <sigh> Besides, the shipping would up the price considerably. So... a download that I can pay for with PayPal, and I'll buy it in a heartbeat - well, as soon as one of my deadbeat clients pays me, anyway.

            Susan,

            Did you know that on the Acknowledgements page (second physical page), in the area where Bob thanks forum users...

            That your name is the first one listed?

            :~}

              Hang around long enough and poke into things enough and one is bound to manage to pick up a few tricks here and there wink

                I can get Bob's book from Amazon UK, which is great. Does anyone have any views on whether my project can be done in Modx before I fork out £40?

                  Unfortunately for your pocketbook, yes. Of course MODX can do it.

                    Is it possible to pull resources from sub-sites/contexts into one parent website?

                    Yes. Absolutely, as long as they are in the same installation. You can also get from just one context and discriminate if you like.

                    Can each sub website (they will be managed by different people) have (or appear to have) its own manager area with its own images folder (for example)?

                    Yes. You would have to set up an ACL (hard to learn at first), User Groups, Resource Groups and Media Sources for each. Then each will have its own area. Only full admins could see all of the contexts (sites) at once.

                    Is there a really good tutorial out there to get me started or is it time I bought Bob's book from Amazon (assuming it is available in the UK)?

                    There are many such good tutorials for lots of things, but they are hard to find sometimes. Bob's book is probably the best one stop shop. I have never read it, however, so I don't know if it addresses multiple domains. I'm sure it does, though, as BobRay is extremely thorough.

                    Any initial thoughts, guidance, warnings etc. would be very much appreciated before I just dive right in and screw it up.

                    You are in a new platform using a lot of new techniques for the first time. You'll screw it up. You should be happy about it and dive right in! Besides, it is pretty hard to screw it up in a way that it cannot be fixed really easily. MODX is extremely forgiving (believe me, I know).

                      Failure is just another word for saying you didn't want to try. "It can't be done" means "I don't know how".

                      Hi all

                      OK, the project is going well and all seems to be working as expected apart from a couple of things which I wondered if I could get some guidance on please?

                      1. When logged in to the main domain for the manager the 'editor' is not able to see the unpublished pages they have created. I understand this is down to sessions and that the 'editor' is not technically 'logged in' to their particular Context. This makes sense but I wondered what is the best approach to it? Is there a way of 'masking' the manager domain so they are still sharing the files etc but they are actually logged in to their own site?

                      2. There is a well-documented bug that gives no 'Policy' list when assigning media sources to a User Group. Does anyone know of a fix either quick and dirty or in the pipeline at all? Here is a better description of the bug; https://forums.modx.com/thread/?thread=73295&page=1

                      Any thoughts at all?
