System Settings - infinite loading

Hi there,
I'm a beginner in using modX.
So it may be my fault, then please tell me where I'm wrong.
The problem is the following:
When I go to "System" -> "System Settings" there is nothing. So I choose one of the categories (or however the are called in English version. I'm using Russian version of modX so I can make some mistakes in names) for example "Friendly URLs". And then modX starts loading this category, but I waited for about an hour and nothing changed it never stops loading. I also tried to refresh the settings page without choosing any category but the result was the same.
If anyone knows how to solve this problem, please answer.
modX version is 2.2.4.

And one more thing. It's another problem which I have. I post it here just to avoid creating a new thread. So, when I'm trying to edit an ".htaccess" file or any .js or .css file from modX manager it gives me this error: "
Warning: json_encode() [function.json-encode]: Invalid UTF-8 sequence in argument in /home/users1/o/orel/domains/restyle.orel.myjino.ru/core/xpdo/xpdo.class.php on line 2327". If there is any solution to this problem I'll be also very glad to hear it. But still, the main problem is the one with System Settings. Could this be an encoding problem in MySQL? What's the encoding for your database?

It does sound like an encoding problem. Be sure to check the encoding of the tables and fields too in PhpMyAdmin.

Thx. I'll try. My current database charset is not utf8, so I think it would help.
But do you know anything about the first problem?

I was surprised. But I've checked all the settings and I have "utf8_general_ci" everywhere... is there anything else that can make modX act like that?

My only other guess would be the encoding of the Lexicon file used for the System Setting descriptions.

I think it would be core/lexicon/ru/setting.inc.php

You might try changing the Manager language (and maybe the culture_key) to en to see if that fixes it.

The encoding of the file is also UTF8
As I mentioned in the first post, I cannot access system settings... I get infinite loading. Should I try to reinstall modX with English language by default?

Sorry, of course you did. I would not do a full new install just yet.

It's possible that that file is just corrupted, especially if you used FTP to transfer all the files. I've also seen cases where a particular language file is corrupted to begin with. It's easy for that to happen because of the way Git handles text files.

You might try redownloading MODX, unzipping it, and just replacing that file.

BTW, do you have the compress_js and compress_css system settings turned off? If not, that's definitely worth a try. You can do it in the modx_system_settings table in PhpMyAdmin (where you could also change the Manager language if you want to try that as well).

I've done everything... reuploaded the translation files, changed language to english, turned off js and css compression but nothing changed

Did you turn off the compress_js and compress_css settings and then delete all files in the core/cache directory and clear your browser cache and cookies?

You could also try running Setup with the "Upgrade" box checked, then clearing the stuff I mentioned above. You won't lose any of your work.

I'm afraid I can't think of anything else to try, other than re-downloading MODX and re-uploading the MODX files and running Setup in upgrade mode.

You haven't messed with MODX permissions, have you?
