Hello - I'm a web-design dummy and have taken over a website that someone built for me that is hosted on ModX (www.hopemariettafoundation.org). On my home page, I have a few images on there that for some reason now are not displayed. The other images throughout the website however are fine. Is there a way to correct this problem, or to roll the website back to a previous version where this error did not occur? Please advise and speak as if you were speaking to a four year old. Need help!

    Thanks!

It looks like all the links are gone, or at least the characters within them are missing. What is displaying is only the backslashes from the file paths. The files are probably still where they were, you'll just need to find them and fix the paths.

It looks like most of the wonkiness is showing up from the content area. So let's look there first.

On your home page in the MODX manager, there should be some code in the content section. If you click the "html" button a pop up should show up. Can you copy that code and paste it here? Above the reply box here in the forum, the second set from the left, third button in is the "code" wrapper. Click that, and paste the code from your content section html between the code tags. (otherwise the forum will attempt to process the MODX tags)

Also, can you tell us which version of MODX this is? In the manger, upper left corner you should see your site name and under that, the MODX version. Evolution or Revolution? And the version number please.

Thanks in advance! I tried adding new pictures, but those will not show up either. I'm not seeing anything referencing the version in the upper left hand corner, but I've attached a screenshot. Thank you again for being so helpful.

Ouch... that's what I thought. Somehow all your paths were stripped of everything except the back slashes and the quotation marks within them. It looks as if the titles were retained but since most of the titles are the same it's hard to know which image was which.

I've taken the liberty to clean this up a bit for you, and attempted to insert image tags where they should be so that you can edit them in your manager editor and get the correct images to display. Right click on the image boxes that should appear in the editor (little boxes, no image shows) and select edit image. Then select the correct image from the browser and insert.

I've also inserted some Evolution tags where links should be, but since the photos page wasn't open in your image all I could see was the ID of the pictures page (7). You'll want to fix the links to the gallery pages and change the ID from 7 to whichever page ID they should really go to. To edit these (i.e. click here links) click on the underlined link, and use the button at the top of the editor that looks like a chain link. Or, just get the page ID from your resource tree (click the arrow next to pictures(7)) and replace ~7 with the correct ID.

I did manage to find the path for the Dr.'s images, so those should actually show up for you (bottom of the page).

Additionally, it looks as if there's a TV or a chunk calling up your gallery slideshow on the home page, so that element will have to be edited as well to remove the backslashes and re-insert the link that was there. Check on your home page, look for Template Variables.

Unfortunately I have never used Evolution, so I can't really be more specific about finding things (which was why I had you looking in the wrong corner for the version number, it's on the right side in Evolution - the image helped a lot BTW, thank you)

Paste the following code into the html editor to get the page back to normal (toggle html, or use the html button), and then toggle back to rich text so that you can edit the image and link paths that I guessed on.

Don't worry about losing content by replacing the code... it's here on the forum if you ever did want to just paste it back in as is. The code below should look better at least, and the empty image boxes should make it easier to replace the image paths.

The big question is... why did this happen in the first place? If this code is coming from your content area, there's no reason for it being stripped like that within the manager itself. I hope someone else will chime in here because this whole thing sounds very strange indeed...

Thank you so so much for taking the time to look into this and especially for taking the time to help fix it. I will follow your directions and see if I can make any progress.

I [surprisingly] understand your theory about losing the links. However, what really stumps me is that when I add a new picture onto the homepage, nothing shows up. It just displays as if it was a broken link, like the current pictures. Any idea why that is happening?

What about adding images from other pages? Is the homepage the only offender?

If it's not happening on other pages, it's not the editor, and something is amiss with the home page. A quick fix might be simply re-creating the home page, and then assign the site start ID to that new page.

I also noticed that there's no way to return to the home page within your site, it's not listed in the menu. That would be a nice addition. But without knowing how the menu is generated I don't know exactly how to tell you to get it to show.

You could pm me a login and I could take a look around for you but like I said before, I've never stepped foot into an Evolution Manager so I'm not really the best person to chose for this (plus I do not claim MODX expertise in any way just yet).

That's one of the strangest things I've ever seen in MODX.

I'm going to make three guesses, because they are the only way I can think of to explain what you're seeing:

                1. magic_quotes_gpc is turned on at the server (it needs to be off) -- talk to your host (but that's not your main problem).

                2. The code you showed came from viewing the source of the page in your browser rather than from the resource content field in the Manager (or you removed some MODX tags in square brackets from the page code at some point).

                3. In the actual page content (or the page template) there are (or were) MODX tags that generated all or part of the image HTML code (using a snippet or, more likely, a template variable).

If my guesses above are right (and they may not be) here's my guess on what happened:

                • A template variable (TV) was used to generate the image code
                • The TV has no sensible default value
                • The template used by the page changed
                • That emptied the TV values for that page so the image tags are filled with nothing

Can you give us a screen shot of the Manager when editing the problem page (with the content field showing)?

It would also help if you told us what you've done with the site since taking it over. That might give a clue to what caused this.
