Help with NewsPublisher and Permissions

Hi All - and hopefully Bob Ray who's already been big help with permissions....

I'm currently building a site for a small catholic elementary school in my area. I'm using Revo which I'm getting used to now. I've built a few sites including our business site: http://www.bigpixelstudio.com on revo and for the most part I'm starting to understand the differences from Evo. I have a very specific need on this site which I could do very quickly in Evo but is causing me some headaches on the new platform. Here is what I need to do and any help in how to go about this would really be appreciated.

I will have a section for the teachers. Each teacher will have their own page that they can update and edit. The only thing I want to be able to edit is the Content area. This would include uploading photos, pdf's, etc. for their students use. I don't want teachers to see any other part of the backend and in fact, I was hoping to use NewsPublisher so they could simply click a button, edit their page and hit save never having them see the backend.

So, I need to setup permissions that will work for this and I need to setup NewsPublisher if it is capable of doing what I want.

The one other part of this whole situation is that the Principal of the school needs to be able to add and remove teacher pages whenever she wants to. The permissions are so confusing to me, I'm not sure how I'm going to set it up and then teach her how to do it.

As I've mentioned already, any help here would be great. I'm certainly willing to pay someone for some help in getting both of these items working and documented if that would help.

I know what you want to do I tried doing it about a year ago for most of everything you want to do NewsPublisher will work except when it comes to uploading stuff, that is where the permissions get more mind bending since NewsPublisher is a front end editor and in order to upload files you need to be logged into the backend.

My suggestion is make a template and use Form Customization and apply to all users in the teacher group and only show them the fields you want them to have access to because they will need to have access to the backend in order to upload files of any type.

I'm so lost right now with just getting permissions going that I'm not even thinking about news publisher right now. If I can just get them to login to the manager and only see their page and be able to edit it, I'll be happy. I'm just blown away by how utterly confusing this all is. I truly want to use Revo for projects, but this is really knocking the wind out of my sails. Should have built it in Evo and been done with it already.

Thanks for the suggestions though. Once I get it I'm sure I'll calm down.

Here is my suggestion.

Make two main User Groups:

• Editors - this will be the Principal and related
• Contributors - this will be the teachers

Make sub groups under Contributors, one for each teacher or teacher group. You now need to assign the Editors and Contributors permissions to the manager and permissions to edit/create documents. Basically what ever you want them to do. Now before you go any further verify that users in your group can log in to the manager and edit pages.

Now you want to limit the pages that a user group can edit and this is where Resource Groups come into play. You will be creating several of these the first is Editor/Principle. Then you will need to create a Resource Group for each sub Contributor group you created. Now you must also assign then assign the pages to the Resource Group. Note you will need to assign the pages to both the Editor/Principle and the sub group so the Editor can edit them.

Now go back and edit your groups and in the Resource group tab add the Resource Group you want and the mgr context with Resource ACL. Flush your perms and then test.

Note you may have to also assign web content perms of Load, List and View.

It sounds good the way you explain it, but I can't seem to get anything to work. To me it would make sense to have a Teacher Group that I put all teachers in and then assign each teacher to their own page. I don't understand why this is so hard in ModX. I've done this in Evo and in several other systems pretty easily.

I understand security was setup to have loads of power but it should have also been setup for normal people to use.

I know this is sort of an older discussion, but I am trying to accomplish the same goals, and I have many of the same questions.

To mdsdesign: did you accomplish your goals in Revolution? If so, can you share details?
