Running a site on MODx 2.0.2-pl. Just installed the newest version of PHPThumbOf on the server (1.4.0). When the images are called on the page using PHPThumbOf, the images aren't showing. I checked the HTML and I see the image file path:

    /assets/components/phpthumbof/cache/Morris_3.846a03bbfdc4610c28e1e3f8761cdbfb45.jpg

When I look at that file on the server in that folder path, I see that a file with this name exist, but it has a permission of "000". All the directories in this path all have a permission of "755". I try changing the image's permission to "755" or something else, but I get this warning:

The operation couldn't be completed. Could not change permissions of “Morris_3.846a03bbfdc4610c28e1e3f8761cdbfb45.jpg”.

    Error -142: remote chmod failed

I can't download the images either. So at this point I'm not sure if potentially some plugin is missing on the server to generate images with PHPThumb or if it's a MODx issue outputting the images incorrectly. Anyone else had this problem?

Have not had that exact issue, however it looks like maybe the ownership of the file is not set properly for the webserver (service) to apply the proper permissions to view the image source. Double check the files ownership and if it's not the same as the user for the webservice then change it so that the webserver can access them properly and then you should also be able to set the permissions as needed.

Also if these are all in the cache folder try to delete all the files in the cache folder and try again.

I think you're right about the server's permission settings. I just went ahead and grabbed PHP thumb directly (http://phpthumb.sourceforge.net/) and installed it and it works great on the site now. It's the client's server which I've never worked on before and since it's a very small project (budget wise), instead of trying to get the server permission issues straightened out, I found this solution to work.
