Checking the postings on the probability of modx supporting postgres through xDPO, if found that the last postings date back to 2010 or earlier. As the change logs of the latest modx 2.x do not state anything on postgres support either can somebody post here an update on the current status of the postgres support.

No status at the moment. I am unfortunately working on many other projects and do not have the time to implement this currently. I was hoping someone would step up and contribute the pgsql driver implementation for xPDO to get things started, but so far, no luck.
I had the same question in my head couple days ago and did speak about this at home. I thought that the Postgre was under work by some other than you opengeek, so did not move my finger to any direction.
But would like to officially volunteer for it, I know what it will be to create the driver and know lot of the issues that I will be facing

Could also write ANSI SQL unit tests to separate them from non standard MySQL functionalities like the GROUP BY.

Initial commit to GitHub for PostgreSQL driver can be found from :
https://github.com/lazylegs/xpdo/tree/pgsql_driver/
This modified bit of the core due to auto increment not being native method and is missing ON UPDATE stuff which I already made for oracle and reverse engineering your database does not work. So this is not fully compatible to latest release of xPDO.
The xPDO core is changed to get auto increment value, the method is moved to driver (even still can be called via $xpdo) and xPDOObject is also changed bit to match the core change.
But all "basic" stuff works
