Hi,
I have some links set to target="_blank" in the link attributes of the back end manager which opens a new tab in FireFox (not sure on IE7 tho) and I believe the link insert/edit box from TinyMCE has a section that allows you to change how the link works:
Open in this window / frame
Open in new window (_blank)
Open in parent window / frame (_parent)
Open in top frame (replaces all frames (_top)
Hope that helps

Strange, all my links are the same, but when I click on them, they open to new windows in mozFF/IE7. Must be something in my user settings within moz.

IE7 goes to new window too.

whether a link opens in a new window, a new tab, or in the current window is up to the user and their browser settings. target="_blank" is not an accepted attribute in XHTML and will break validation. I have my Safari preferences set to open _blank links in a new tab behind the active tab and holding command while clicking a link forces the link that would normally spawn in the same tab/page to open in a new tab instead.
I don’t think there is a way to force a users browser to open your links in a new tab as you can’t be sure that their browser supports tabbed browsing.
