In order to get the manager working I had to turn the compression off in the Database directly. That makes it function. The question is, what do I fix to be able to turn compression back on?
There is a variable under system/system settings/backend manager/manager js/css compression document root... it is currently empty. Is this where I 'fix' the problem? There is a warning here to not change it unless I know what I'm doing... good advice no doubt. My searches so far are coming up empty. Does this get a 'path'? or something else? Thanks!

I believe that this depends more on the configuration of the server hosting the site. If it doesn't support the compression, then it won't work no matter what your MODx settings are.
The settings you see in the system settings is what sets the values in the database. Since you couldn't access that form, you had to go directly to the database to turn them off (set them to 0).

This is an advanced install with things moved and renamed. I have a traditional install on the same server using compression, so I know this is not a server issue. I need more info on this "compression document root" setting as it is the compression factor that is failing to work when needed. The default is an empty field. My searches haven't come up with anything yet to understand if this is the right setting to change or precisely what information is needed. I take the warning seriously... that's why I'm asking.
Originally I had to turn compression off manually because the entire Manager was failing to work! Turning compression off was a bandaid that worked.
