    Hello, I’m going to be redesigning a site that has around 18,000 web pages and I was wondering if anyone on this forum is running a site in MODx that has that many. I saw a post about Bryan.edu having 2500+ pages, but this site is going to have a lot more than that.

    I’m just wondering if there is a limit to the amount of pages MODx can handle on a lot of different levels - usability, load to php, etc. Anyone have any thoughts.

    Oh yeah, and it will be running on OS X with apache, and in case you are wondering it is a website for a school system.

    Thanks for any advice.

      I don’t think I’d personally run that many docs in 096. 097 is another issue entirely however, as it uses a completely different caching algorithm that shouldn’t choke on itself, but its not ready for production yet.

        Thanks Ryan, we’re going to be developing the site in stages, and I hope that by the time we get finished 0.9.7 will be out and we can upgrade (this is going to be a long project smiley ). I don’t know if any other CMS that will do the job so I guess I’m just going to take the plunge. Worst case would be that we’d have to do multiple installs of MODx to suit our needs, and that wouldn’t be too bad.

        Thanks

          I have a site running 500+ pages no problem, the siteCache.idx.php is only 242kb because I store all my snippet information in external files. You caught my attention when you talked about it being for a school system which is EXACTLY what I have planned as well. I will be using 0.9.7 contexts to handle the websites for 16 different schools, all with a single manager.

          My recommendation is to start some preliminary work with 0.9.6 and then before you make your site live, upgrade to 0.9.7. Personally though, I’m going to be building mine from scratch as soon as the first alpha is out smiley

            Sweet, interesting to know that someone is doing the same thing. I think we’ll be running separate installs for each school, possibly running off of the same core code. I also plan to start using 0.9.6 and then upgrade asap to 0.9.7. Let me know how it goes for you.

            Can you expand on ’I store all my snippet information in external files’. What information are you storing, and how did you go about doing that?

              He means that each snippet stored in the MODx database (and subsequently the siteCache file) consists of one line which simply includes the external PHP file:
              return include ($modx->config['base_path'] . 'assets/snippets/snippet.php');

              I use the same technique, which keeps the siteCache file slim and allows me to manage all my PHP code via the filesystem/SVN.

                  I learned from the best, Jason wink

                  btw, my MODx system is pushing 650 pages now and still chugging away! I’ve moved on to custom tailored snippets for speed improvements. General purpose snippets like Ditto and Wayfinder started to add too much overhead on my page loads. By authoring my own I can speed things up a bit.
