How does the site perform in different browsers? Enable/disable plugins?
I have a dev site on a live subdirectory that's painfully slow right now in FF with add-ons enabled, yet without them loads up right quick. Another site with nearly identical yet much heavier code works great. I still don't know what the problem could be. It became such a problem that I couldn't even click on the front end's tab without lag, but the manager is fast enough. Now to the task of enabling add-ons one by one to see what's wonking it.
This is literally the same MODX install, in the same browser, just two different hosts. It's not about plugins, or extensions etc.
Like I said, it looks like Executioner measured one particular snippet call massively different on the two servers, and the snippet itself is a getResources call that also uses phpthumbof on processed image TVs. I think it's something to do with permissions, but life is too short.
I've ducked the problem by finding a new host, so I don't know why there was an issue (their support was clueless).

This is sooooo broad. There are thousands of things that could be different on each host. Here are a few things that could account for vast differences in load times:
* One host has opcode caching (e.g. APC), the other doesn't
* One host is running PHP dso whereas the other is using cgi
* One host has more memory
* One host has more CPU
* One host has MySQL configured more efficiently
* One host has a more streamlined webserver (apache)
* One host throttles bandwidth or the # of concurrent page requests
Add to Everett's list an overtaxed Apache or MySQL server on shared hosting.

PLEASE, PLEASE specify the version of MODX you are using.

If phpthumbof is involved, the cache plugin for it can cause performance issues (basically causing the server to constantly regenerate thumbnails). If they only have GD installed that can also cause problems, especially with larger images. ImageMagick is highly recommended, granted it can still take a long time if you feed it multiple 1+MB images.
Everett is correct, there are a lot of other factors that can determine how well a site performs on a given host (and even different servers with the same host).
The server could also be grossly overloaded, which is common with most shared hosting.
