Just use the portable XAMPP, it’s available for Win + Mac: http://portableapps.com/apps/development/xampp
I suggest you use USB-sticks instead instead of CD-ROMs though.
I’m considering to create a catalogue of products made by one company and a set of articles
as real website that uses MODx for CMS. The catalogue will be distributed as downloadable
package and will be given out on CD-ROMs.
It seems a special web server for CD-ROMs can be used for this
http://www.stunnix.com/prod/aws/overviews.shtml
and it looks like it will allow to produce a CD-ROM and package for Mac OS and Windows.
Have anybody heard of doing something like this with MODx?
just one problem how would you write to the db and the cache files? things like who is logged in etc. on a stick this would work but on cd no way, then you need to store those files into memory maybe?

maybe this is something for you: http://www.chsoftware.net/en/products/wosx/wosx.htm
On my mac, I use MAMP. And it works flawlessly for me. But it doesn’t save to the HD (if it’s on a CD).
