Thanks, but that didn’t do any good. I went ahead and filled out a support ticket to see if hostgator can help. It looks like it could be a long day.

I have been playing around with MODx on my workstation for a week, and now it’s time to to go live. I have a reseller account with Hostgator, but I can’t get MODx installed. I know I am missing something very obvious. When I try to access http://www.mysite.com/install/index.php I get a 500 internal server error. I also changed the permissions for the files/folders according to the online installation instructions. I know I am not giving you guys much to do on. I am just hoping that what I am experiencing is common, and there is an easy fix. Ya right
Have you looked at the site in either an FTP program or the Control Panel using its File Manager to see that the MODx files are in the right directory?
On most hosts, they’ll need to be in the public_html directory for you to be able access them by browser.

They are in the right place, but here is the weird part. I temporarily renamed the install folder while I was away from the computer, just to keep anyone from messing with it. After I renamed it back to install, it worked. Now I can install MODx. That is so strange. I didn’t change anything else, and now it works. I guess the apache gods were just messing with me. Oh well, no complaints here, it works. Thanks for the help guys.
The problem is solved, and now I know why (for anybody experiencing similar problems). I followed the instructions on the modx site for setting permissions. However, Hostgator requires different settings as the server is running phpsuexec. All files needed to be set to 644 and all folders to 755. I didn’t realize that they changed them for me, until I finally got an email explaining that.
