I was recently updating some CSS on a placeholder website, and noticed random dictionary word subdomains were being generated, where I use the site_url placeholder. It goes away when I clear the cache, but turns up again.
For now, I hardcoded the url in place of the tag and rewrote all subdomains to the root, changed all passwords, disabled FTP, and checked permissions of the config file and htaccess. My host doesn't have an FTP access log to figure out when this might have happened.
Out of curiosity, where would I look to figure out what is happening? I can afford to delete everything and reinstall, but was hoping it was something I could (some what) prevent in the future.

That's weird. Did you try to call the site_url uncached?
I just looked through all the tables. I can't see where this is set in the first place.
I agree been using modx for about 3 years and never had a problem. Not sure where its at in Revo, IIRC in Evo it was in manager/includes/config.inc.php
Just had a similar think in Evo 1.0.5 - every link produced and the URL in the browser bar was replacing the 'www' with 'pop' as if i'd made a subdomain called 'pop'
At first I thought I'd been hacked somewhere - but no changes to DNS, .htaccess or robots.txt. Got the hosting people to have a look as well - nothing strange going on at server level.
Finally, I simply cleared the cache for the site - and every page on the site was cached and then deleted from the cache directory.
Site back to normal and big relief as I thought my SEO was broken !
