Blog capability of Evo?

Total newbie here! My company's website is currently built on Modx version 0.9.6.1p2 which I know is pretty old.

I've been asking our web design company who deals with all this about adding a blog functionality to our website and they are suggesting that we build a blog into the version of Modx we currently have.

Now apart from the obvious security issues that aren't addressed by remaining with our current version, does anyone know what kind of blog functionality is build in to the latest version of Evo? I found a demo of Evolution online which had a blog built into it but I don't know if that's just a sample site which wouldn't pass along the same feature if we upgraded from our current site.

Like I said I really don't know very much about this I just need to find out if its worth pushing for the latest version of Evolution or if I should just let the web development company go ahead and build a blog into our elderly Modx version.

Any help would be much appreciated.

well, first i would say upgrading sounds a good idea for many reasons including security of course

when it comes to blogging, evo is a great tool with ditto for content aggregation and filtering by date or else
add jot for the commenting functionnalities and you'll have all you need to build a great blog

of course, using the latest releases of these tools will allow you to have more functionnalities and less bugs

pkBlog is a great blogging tool for Evolution, though I'm not positive that it works with the current version.

Has VirtualBear has suggested, I'd go with Ditto + Jot. You can customize it as you want, although it will take some time.

The only problem I had with jot was that I have never liked captcha but i don't like spam too, so I disabled captcha and added a more clever system to stop spam (now i have 0 spam, only "human" spam): https://forums.modx.com/thread/19624/honeypot-captcha-jot

Does that mean that if I upgrade a blog will have to be created from scratch using Ditto?

It appears to show a ready made blog container which is easy to add too. Is this just a well set up demo or could I get that functionality relatively quickly by upgrading?

You could install the demo website provided during installation and see how the blog works there, then you can integrate it in your company website.

The blog installed with the demo is not really very impressive, and it's never been very clear how it's supposed to operate.

I think you have several choices (though upgrading to the current Evo version is not a matter of choice, unless you want to be hacked). Any of these involves setting up your listing pages (using Ditto, not difficult at all) and single-post pages (probably with Jot for comments) for yourself. It's the input method that you have to choose:
- You could just use standard input in the backend to create the posts as resources
- You could use QuickManager as a friendlier method of creating and editing the posts
- You can use a front-end document manager such as PubKit (http://modx.com/extras/package/pubkit), which is more advanced than pkBlog (e.g. it allows you to include your TVs in input fields). In fact I think there would be a problem running pkBlog with Evo 1.0.6, because of changes in the way placeholders are handled.

PubKit comes with an installer for a demo sitelet, which I would recommend trying on a local install to find your way around. I'm still an Evo fan, and plan to continue developing PubKit for my own sites.
