Sorry if I'm missing something obvious but..
Has I understand a CMP using Modext components will read data through AJAX.
Is there any (standard) method to pass data to the CMP without the need for a second connection to the server because of the AJAX request?
Is the performance lost created by this ajax call negligible?

You can collect data in your controller and register that as a javascript variable, and use that in your CMP, to just give a quick example. VersionX2 uses this for its back-end component too:
