    Hello,

Thanks in advance for any help given.

I have a problem which I cannot solve which seems to be quite common.
A fresh install seems to e fine without errors. However when accessing the manager, I am confronted with the dash board and no side pane and when accessing any other section the page retains the top menu bar, but no content.

I keep getting random JavaScript errors. Generally about undefined chars.

I have tried following other posts with similar problems but they don't solve my issue, generally disabling 'compress JS' in the DB, and removing cache. Also I've tried to disable suhosin which doesn't help. However this is switched back on now. My XAMPP copy of modx works fine

I have tried modx rev 2.2.2 pl and 2.2.0 pl.

        Thanks for your reply,
I've read through, it seems that I've tried everything. I have put the php info back online as the above link. Would you mind having a quick look to see if I have missed anything please?

BTW I bought your book, very worth while, I'll recommend it to anyone using this software.

The most likely problem is with either file permissions/ownership or sessions. I think the permissions should all be 755/644 for folders/files, but I'm not sure about that with Suhosin.

You might try changing session.save_path to point to somewhere writable within the MODX directories.

I wonder about session.use_only_cookies and the fact that you're using htttps. I don't know a lot about configuring https.

My first suspicion is a corrupted or missing MODX file, especially if you transferred them with FTP rather than unzipping a file on the server. It happens fairly often with FTP.

The JS errors suggest that MODX is looking for $modx->user, which I don't think is available in the Manager, so another possibility is a bad plugin that's written for the front-end but executing in the Manager (or mis-written). You could try disabling all plugins and see if that helps. Toggle the disabled/enabled field (can't remember which it is) for the plugin in the modx_plugins table in PhpMyAdmin from 0 to 1 or vice versa.

                Hi Bob,

Thank you for your help, I've had to move servers in the end due to time restraints.
I will try your last suggestion when I have time, just for the record.

When you transfer the files, always zip them up, transfer the zip file, and unzip them on the server. See this for more details:

The steps there are for upgrading but installation is very similar.

I know this has been awhile now, but i need to try and revisit this.

I've looked through your FAQ, but it doesn't really help my current situation, which is a fresh install.
I've downloaded a zip file from the modx website and used that, no FTP involved at all. expanded and installed.

I don't understand it as I have another debian server which this works fine on. unfortunatly it is not my production web server! I'm really banging my head now not sure what to do.

I have disabled plugins and it doesn't change anything. Also a new screenshot is attached. this is what it looks like when for instance i click on 'manage users'.

                    Any help will be appreciated!
                    • Check the file paths in the config.inc.php file in the MODX root directory, and all the core.config.php files.

I solved a similar problem yesterday on a site that had been working for 2 months with antique depreciated server paths from before I ever got involved. Thanks to SimpleScripts, the paths from antiquity for this particular Debian server were used at install. I don't know why all of a sudden they stopped working yesterday, but once I updated them (and cleared cache) all was well.
