how to limit &usersList output

I've been trying to fiddle with the webloginpe.class.php file to find a way to limit the initial &usersList - the problem is I can't really filter on anything useful for my needs without it being too specific. Currently I have it sorting on lastlogin DESC - seems to be working ok I think but just too many results.

I've got some optional filtering with a form/snippet when the manager wants to filter for a particular field, which works fine, but I need to cut down the first list on page load.

I'm not bothered about having pagination (although that would be cool too).
