is Revo fine to manage a catalog with 2.000 products?

Hi,
I've read through the forum that to manage something like a catalog the best solution is to create a custom table with custom manager and so on;

anyway I'd really like to use standard resources: to exploit TV, access policy and context behaviour,
mostly because I've not good skill with custom stuff...

In a second moment may be I would need to use also a cart plugin or something similar to link to PayPal,

my question is: could Revo manage 2.000 resources with 5-6 TV (images and doc with MIGX) and offer front-end sorting chance?

I know that Modx can do it...

but how do you think perfomance would be good?

Is it better to choose a dedicated e-commerce software?

There shouldn't be a problem using MODX with 2000 or so documents. Granted the manager tree will get slightly unwealdy as your document count climbs. If you plan to grow past 3-5,000 documents, then I would suggest a custom table (or a dedicated ecommerce solution).

Granted SimpleCart 2 and VisionCart use custom tables to store resources, so that might be another option.

The current SimpleCart release is 1.x, which uses documents for each product. SimpleCart 2 is still in development.

If you are using 2,000 products and needs some great control and ease of use I would recommend FoxyCart. It easy to deploy, and can handle more then just paypal. If you or your customer ever wants a more robust solution you just will not get it easily with SimpleCart. With the new FoxyTools plugin managing inventory, shipping and order status is even easier. My firm does about one to two FoxyCart installs each month and I have never found it not be the right fit.

probably the customer will use a dedicated standalone e-commerce...

You may try with OpenCart, it is quite good.
