MODX install attempt on 2nd and 3rd domain name - falied

Installing on Bluehost. First domain works fine, have sample site up!
Now when I duplicate same procedures on 2 different domains, I get to the database screen (#2), and am told connection to db was successful. No next to click.
So then I go to domain/manager and get error 503 - Could not load MODX config file.
Can you help? Blue host won't support manual installs and SimpleScripts doesn't work right. So I am deadended with MODX.

Well I now have two Bluehost modx sites working, one to go!
The long and short of it seems to be: sometimes the install works on Bluehost and sometimes it doesn't.

I've had better luck and it is much, much quicker to upload the zipped files using a terminal session and ssh.
so:
upload the zipped MODX
unzip in place (on the Bluehost server)
move the files to where they are needed
you are done - continue with the normal install

You need to setup ssh access on BluHost - if I remember correctly BlueHost help area with a little help from google searches had good instructions on setting up ssh access - let me know if you cannot find it, I'm pretty sure I documented somewhere.

All the code below is the commands to type into a terminal window - actually used to install the latest version of evo to a subdomain of mine for testing, only the user name and urls changed to protect the innocent!
I'm sure there is a way to do this on Windows as well - PUTTY perhaps, I don't use Windows normally except for checking websites with IE


Then (assuming you are using linux or MacOS) in a terminal window you can:

upload the zip file (almost 3 x smaller than the unzipped files and only one file - much faster):


log into hosting server - then get to the directory and unzip the zip file:



use ls to check that it worked if you like:


move the files out of the modx-1.0.6 directory into the containing directory


delelete the old directory


You are done - this is much faster than using ftp or sftp to upload the unpacked zip files [ed. note: whistlemaker last edited this post 14 years, 4 months ago.]

I do the same thing at Bluehost, but without SSH. I just create the DB, create a new zip file from the unzipped MODX files on my local machine, upload the new zip file with FTP to the MODX root directory, and uncompress it in cPanel. Then I run Setup. It takes less than 5 minutes.
