Ah missed that bit your issue post. I'd actually started to use "?" instead of "?" which was fine for text fields, but wasn't working on wysiwyg areas as they were getting converted to "?" so gone with your solution, thanks for that.
One thing that I have noticed is this issues isn't happening on the dev setup of the site, but haven't figured what differs from the prod version.

what is the difference between your dev-environment and the live-environment?
must something have todo with your environment, then.
