Hi,
last two-three days I have been engulfed in moving my 2.2.1-pl site onto my host's demo server.
Short version:
Thought apache ownership of core/cache folders was the problem. But page turns things on and off almost randomly. Wayfinder not working, FURLs not working, phpthumbof not showing, Gallery items not showing as before, Japanese appearing as gibberish, jquery gallery script stopped working. Most of these things on and off randomly (except the jquery thing). Is it a charset/collation problem? Maybe its down to the charset setting in the config.inc.php? I've been changing back and forth between utf8 and latin1 to check for changes but coming up short.

Local environment: MAMP Apache 2.0.64, MySQL 5.5.9, PHP 5.2.17 & 5.3.5
New host environment: Apache is 2.2.3 or above, MySQL 5.5.1, PHP Version 5.3.6 (suexec), all extensions available

I have had many hairs turn grey trying to figure out why it is not ending up smoothly, and actually started fearing for my launch deadline next week (almost no room to overrun it).
My main problem I can't really get a stable install going where everything works properly. At first I thought it might be linked to the apache server taking ownership of the core/cache subdirectories. So I could not delete them via FTP. But it seems the CMS itself is available to handle these files on its own so I dont think thats the problem (read on and see what you think).
NB: I am using a Basic Auth in my .htaccess to protect the site from accidentally being viewed before the launch.
Main problems:
- Wayfinder menu on frontpage disappear, normal navigation to subfolders does not work (503 page not found), but then it reappears (maybe when i change the db charset in my core/config/config.core.php)
- a gallery javascript I run has lost it's interface functions
- phpthumbs (gallery item TVs) are not being displayed (its a very important part of the interface and takes hours to reset)
- when i set the charset to latin1 in the main config from the getgo, these thums show however, but then the Japanese content is just gibberish
- changing the charset to utf8, fixes the gibberish into Japanese, but then the phpthumbnails disappear again
- also when using Gallery, I cannot see the thumbs when editing gallerys. this also goes for making nwe galleries.
- while this is going on, the menu/furl navigation turns itself on and off almost as if at random
- after I migrated the site, it seems that some of these symptoms now is also affecting my local server running off of my harddisk. this goes for the wayfinder, FURLS, and javsascript prroblems (might I accidentally have copied something the wrong way?)
Sorry about this unclear presentation of the problems, but I haven't had the brainpower to wrap my ahead around this. It seems as soon as I correct one thing, another thing goes wrong as a consequence.
My theory though, is that it has something to do with the DB collation. It seems that when I change this, I "toggle" the three main problems of the install. One being the wayfinder not showing, FURLs not working. The second being Japanese turning into gibberish. And third being phptumbof thumbs not showing in either the site interface, nor the Gallery section of the manager.
PHPMyAdmin tells me that my local database and the host database has a UTF8 connection. However the tables have the latin1_swedish_ci collation. Subsequently I am left unsure on what to do about that. Go with latin1 or utf8.
Where might it be going wrong?
