I've got a couple 2.2.1 sites that end up redirecting repeatedly if you mistype your username or password during login... they redirect over and over again like a bad case of hiccups. At first I thought this was due to https settings, but after renaming my .htaccess files (one at root and one inside /manager), I'm seeing the same behavior. The behavior seems worse when .htaccess is in place (just standard friendly URL stuff). When I force manager connections to be HTTPS, it gets ridiculous... the page just keeps redirecting over and over again, probably 20 times. This same thing happens on logout. I don't know what (if anything) this has to do with HTTPS, but it's killing my sites. I've observed this same behavior on multiple 2.2.1 sites on different servers.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is this some misconfiguration on my part?
This is a wild guess, but some servers want an .shtml file for various conditions (404.shtml, 301.shtml, etc.). If MODX is in a subdirectory and those files aren't in the MODX root, the server can get really confused.
You might also see if there is an .htaccess file higher up (in a directory above the MODX root) that's doing any rewriting.

Thanks Bob. Hmm... my server doesn't typically rely on the various .shtml files... at least, they aren't created when a new account is created.
I tried removing the .htaccess files throughout and the condition persisted.

Ah. You know what I think it is? It's my LastPass plugin -- it remembers passwords securely, but it keeps trying to populate the fields and it "jiggles" the browser somehow. I don't have it installed on all browsers... the browsers without this plugin worked fine.
That sounds like a good theory. Password managers are great, but they'll cause stuff like that occasionally (and sometimes fill in hidden spam fields in forms).
