We recently updated our 2.2.1 to 2.2.2. Afterwards we cannot access any template variable in any kind of document. Whether they're using articles add on tpls or not. It's systemwide.
I already flushed the cache. We used the tvs beneath the documents but changing back to presenting the tvs in a tab above the documents did not help (cf. screenshots).
Any help would be appreciated.
We managed to solve the problem by now.
What went wrong? We decided to trust the official instructions on how to upgrade a modx installation. There you can read, as a Mac user, you could use Transmit as a ftp client and only "merge" files. We did so.
So I uploaded the sub-folders in modx/manager one at a time again and selected "overwrite". It was the "templates" folder that caused the problems.
For anyone who challenges similar problems, you should tryout to hard-copy the files in the manager folder then. Well at least this is what I did and what helped out.
I have this same problem on a clean setup of 2.2.2 and can't see template variables tab. I'm currently rolling back to 2.2.1 as this renders my site pretty useless. I would love to hear if there are other people experiencing this issue and what the fix might be as the above work around didn't work for me.
As a note, I did a clean install of 2.2.2. and also an upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.2.2 and both exhibited the same issue.
What kind of FTP client did you use to upload the files? Sometimes ftp is a mess, and when many small files should be copied, some were forgotten the time it finished.
Thanks for responding. I'm using CuteFTP but this happens locally as well, when copying files to a new site or in an attempt to copy over an existing site to upgrade. Any other ideas?
Nope. Sorry. First thing I thought of was the cache, hence I dumped it in the backend and I deleted the files on the hdd but that did not seem to help. I also tried out reinstalling some of the plugins but that did not change anything either.
I came across a post in some board that mentioned problems upgrading when the tincy mce component was not installed or ftp-copied properly because it damaged the layout and certain tvs would not be shown. But this was a board entry from some time ago and with different versions of ModX.
When you did the clean install, did you copy the files over or do you really used a fresh folder? It's weird though.
What I though did was: I downloaded the zip file a second time. Maybe the download in first place was a bit corrupted. I heard of that before and only error correction maybe allowed to unzip the file but the contents were slightly damaged. Try downloading the file again maybe this helps. Do they provide a checksum for the downloads?

I had nothing but trouble with FTP. It's just not reliable with that many files. It's much better to zip up the files and unzip them in the new location.

Running Setup is always a good practice, even when just moving a working site to a new location.
It's also sometimes necessary to clear your browser cache and cookies. A leftover cookie can cause various kinds of weirdness.

Thanks for your tip/guide. I looks like browser cookies were the issue. Kind of a pain that I had to wipe out my cookies to get new version to work but it's now working so I'll survive.
