I’ve been asked to look into possibilities for setting up a simple networking site for academic researchers, and I want to see if it can be done relatively easily in MODx. This is what would be required:

    - An external website.
    - The ability for visitors to register (and for their registrations to be checked by an administrator before becoming live) and to have a profile page for each with predefined fields. Possibility of tagging on these profiles.
    - Strong search capabilities for these profile pages, using the predefined fields and tags.
    - Full integration and single login with a bulletin board/forum (with the ability to make some parts of the forum private to specified groups)
    - Ability to email and private message users through the system.

That’s it. It seems to me that this should be possible with MODx and SMF, but it would depend on how well they could be integrated. My other option would be to use some social networking software (e.g., AROUNDMe), but most of these don’t seem that great.

I won’t have time to do the work myself, so I’d be posting this as a commercial job, if it is possible, but I want an idea of how easy or difficult it would be before I do. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!
