Can someone help this poor newbie?

How do I create a menu in modx that works just like the left navigation menu for the Wall Street Journal? (http://wsj.com)

Are you trying to make a template?

If so, you will need to code through CSS a sidebar. Float if left, give it some width, and then create your other div and float it left as well.

You can do it through your Resources -> Resources -> Templates section if you want, or simply hard code one and upload it.
You will need to create a Template variable as well, call it [*sidebar*] or something, that way when you go to create a new page (document), you edit your [*content*] section and your [*sidebar*] section as well. They will both have their own text areas to edit, assuming when you set up the TV (template variable), you give the sidebar a Rich Text attribute.

the rollover flyout menu can be done using wayfinder. Look at the developers site for some good examples.

However in comparison with WSJ theese are half of what you want, having a menu "expanded" and having the flyouts will be tricky, i think.
