I'm just converting a site over from Joomla [yuck] to modx, one of the requirements is that the user profiles be seaarch-able and visible to visitors....
Has anyone done something like this?
Any pointers on where to start? [beyond user profile/login/register package]
-thanks

The Peoples snippet will do some rudimentary searching, but I suspect that you'll have to roll your own.

That is an unpleasant proposition.... is there anyway to publish profile [specifically extended data] as a resource so it can be searched normally / accessed with getResources etc?

You could write fairly straightforward code to make resources out of user profiles and a plugin that would do so for new users. The resource object is not really suited to storing user info, though, and if you added a bunch of TVs, it would be slow and cumbersome to search.
You might be better off with your own search code.
It depends a little on how many users there are. If it's not too many, you could use getCollectionGraph() to get all of them and their profiles and just search the resulting array.
If there are a lot of them, you could use the search criteria in the getCollectionGraph() call.

Hmm it's a fairly extensive amount of data:
http://canadianworldmusic.com take a peek at the artists sections, they need to be searched, updated by the artists etc.
trying to plan the best method of getting this done.

It looks like it might be easier to build a custom table to store the data, and then you can just add that to the search.

And still have users be able to update that data associated with their profiles?
