I'm new to plugins, about to try writing one, and would like recommendations for where/how to output plugin results etc. to make sure the plugin does what it's supposed to do...before I test its desired email component.

The error log would probably be easiest..
$modx->log(modX::LOG_LEVEL_ERROR, 'this is in the error log');
Some plugins can return content in another way.
That should work for my hopefully modest requirements: no news == good news else find/fix the error.
