i've spent like 2-3hrs searching & thinking up ways to do this, is this not a common enough concept for there to be a clear way to do it?

let's say i have a directory on the server full of files, such as: /assets/uploads/file1.doc

-if an anonymous web visitor tries to access it, it should go to the 404 page designated in modx
-if the user is logged in, they can view the file

how can i get this going or what are my options?
-access policies can do this for resources, but what about files or links to files from TVs of a resource? friendly urls are enabled btw
-can a login form post the credentials to a separate directory's htaccess login (with modx install inside of it that contains links to the private files)? or is htaccess capable of doing per folder logins together with a modx login under the same installation?

    this is fairly urgent
