I thought I’d post this in case others run into a similar problem.
My ftp program failed to overwrite \assets\snippets\wayfinder\wayfinder.inc.php because I made a trivial modification to it and didn’t bother to rename it and my version was newer than the one in 0.9.6. I’m guessing that left me with the database part of Wayfinder at 2.0 and my include file at 1.x. The result was that Wayfinder produced no output at all, even with $debug set.
The lessons:
1. As suggested in the docs, ALWAYS rename snippets you modify. Don’t count on remembering to do it later.
2. Make sure whatever means you use to copy the upgrade files to your server is set to always overwrite. (I thought mine was, but I was wrong).

Thanks for the heads up on this one BobRay.
And rest assured we are all ready for this problem to go away permanently; it is priority number one to complete the new installation and packaging facilities for 0.9.7 release that will allow you to upgrade the MODx core engine without affecting existing add-ons or other physical resources within a deployment.
More tantalizing 0.9.7 news. I can’t wait ...
