Just an update on this. This site is working fine with the latest articles - it needed a fairly powerful VPS to make it work smoothly.
Thanks for that Stewart. If you don't mind me asking, what is your definition of "fairly powerful VPS"? I may have to buy something soon ...

This originally had a MODX install with 6900 articles and needed somewhere around 4gb ram and 3ghz CPU. Since then we have added 4 sites with the same MODX install (but different articles content) that had between 2000 and 5000 articles and this needed to be bumped up to 6gm ram and 4ghz CPU but this absolutely flies now. Let me know if you would like the URL to have a look around.
One thing I would say is that trying to develop the site locally was tricky as my PC although it has 8gb ram struggled so it was easier to have a VPS and do the build on there.
