I’ve read through the documentation and a lot of the forum but not everything about MODx has clicked into place yet in my head.
I’m pretty sure I understand the templating system, Chunks and Snippets. Template Variables is the one thing that some days I think I understand and then other days I haven’t got a clue.
What I want to do with MODx is create a website that will display pages of information from data held in a database. What is the easiest way of going about doing that with MODx? My first task is to simply be able to conect to the database and display info from a single table. Then I’d like to be able to combine info from multiple tables. Next stage is to allow the user to view information based on selections they make ie find me all widgets that are blue sort of thing. I’m not looking to alter the information in the database, just display it.
I’m not a mySQL/PHP expert by any stretch but I have self taught myself to this before in a non-MODx site so I do understand the basics of extracting info from a database (queries joins etc etc). What I’m having problems with is just getting in the right mindset of how to do this within the MODx environment.
Can anyone give me a quick pointer in really simple language ... I’m sure once I do finally grasp how MODx works it is really quite straight forward.

There is a slight learning curve to the software but well worth the initial investment in time it takes to figure it out. Have a look at the wiki here and become acquainted with the api’s, sounds like just what you are looking for.

As for Template Variables, think of them as extra content areas in the templates which can either have a set default content, or can be modified on a page by page basis. Have a look at this post and it may make more sense...
