I just want to make sure that I got it right. Since all the input options of file referencing TVs are gone in MODX 2.2 I have to create a separate media source for every file type restriction I want to use in a TV. Is that correct?
Even if file type restrictions in media sources are a nice thing, I think it is not very handy to be forced to rely on them exclusively.
In my specific case I have a TV which references mp4 video files. So the website editor should only see mp4 files when using the MODX browser for this TV. That means I have to create a separate media source for this TV, which is actually nothing else than a copy of an existing media source with the additional restriction setting.
But now I have this new media source, which I don’t want editors to see in the media source list – because I emphasize very much on easy usability for CMS users. And a duplicate media source, which only exists to provide a restriction for a TV, has no place in the media source list, when an editor wants to insert an image in TinyMCE.
OK, I could change access rights of the editor group in a way, so that editors are not allowed to see the media source list at all. Then they would not see the redundant media sources. But this would limit them to only use one preselected media source. Multiple image sources for use with TinyMCE would not be possible with this dirty workaround.
And besides, I think it’s way too much hassle, having to add a new media source and playing around with access rights just to have a simple file type restriction for a TV plus an intuitive usability for editors.
OK, I think I’ll do that. Just wanted to be sure that it makes sense. And not that it’s just me getting my wires crossed ;-)
