I've tried to find a way to boost the overall performance of the plugin but failed. In the meantime I did more speed tests that I want to share.
Deaktivating the Plugin and only looking ath the getResourcefield snippet shows a different picture:
getResourceField, fetching an image TV
processMediaPathes Inactive
avg. about 0.2500 s
processMediaPathes Active
avg. about 0.3700
Seems that fetching a TV is very taxing on getResourceField when you use it in conjunction with processMediaPathes (about 1.5 as much). Thats a nice, because it means that the basic idea of the processMediaPlugin is not that bad.
Apart from this I'm really surprised how much more it takes to get a custom TV in comparission to a document Tv (e.g pagetitle). I wonder if there are any ways to speed this up.
