    Hi Guys,
Using Modx 2.2 with Babel PHP 5.2.17, Mysql 5, Apache 2 and I've set Modx 2.2 to use UTF-8 unicode on installing it day one. Problem is I am getting question mark characters instead of the russian ones like привет.. I thought utf-8 unicode handles all these characters? Same issue with chinese...etc
    Any ideas pls
Thanks [ed. note: howster last edited this post 14 years, 9 months ago.]

Also if I have a russian context say

      ru
      >animals
      >>cats
      >>dogs
      >>horses

and I edit say cats with new text content. The menu tree repositions that item to the end of rthe container animals i.e.

      ru
      >animals
      >>dogs
      >>horses
      >>cats

      which disrupts the navigation.

I have the same issue with Chinese characters. Everything (MODx and DB) is set up as UTF-8 here, too.

Ya I noticed during install you are asked what charset/collation to use and regardless of the selection latin1_swedish_ci appears to be whats set in the database. First browse the database itself with PHPMyAdmin or whatever you use to ensure the chinese characters are correctly displayed there. Then look for the table modx_site_content and edit the latin1_swedish_ci collations to utf8 (unicode or general). Also check that the database itself is set to utf8 under operations.Clear modx cache and see if chinese characters display. If that doesnt work try the more comprehensive approach of exporting the entire database as sql and do a find for "latin1" and replace all instances with "utf8" . Reimport then into your database. Remember backup existing database first.
Hope this helps. Worked for me. [ed. note: howster last edited this post 14 years, 7 months ago.]

            Hi howster,

I simply edited the site_content table column collations, as advised, and it just worked. Thanks!

I guess the MODx team needs to fix the installer.

Great. I actually noticed that if you set the collation of the database using PHPMYADMIN to utf8 prior to running the modx installer everything will install as intended i.e. as utf8. Selecting the collation during the install process in modx seems to do nothing. By default it just reads the existing collation of the database and changing it in the dropdown does nothing.
