    Hello All,
I’m new to MODX and have managed to successfully get it up and running on my own dedicated server. Now what I need is a way for me to design and build a website for someone else and then allow them to update the content and add pages.
But, I want to be able to offer it as a CMS solution to someone who won’t have a dedicated server due to their budget restrictions. They have asked me to recommend a host (their max budget is £120/year - about $240). Is there a good webhost out there that offers a shared hosting package, that will give me access to set permissions to 777, .htaccess , modrewrite etc and everything else that MODX needs?
If not, is it possible for them to host elsewhere and for me to use my dedicated server with their database somehow? I don’t mind using my server but don’t want the hosting responsibility or to be in control of their data if I can avoid it.

Can anyone suggest the best method or a good shared hosting provider (ideally in the UK) that can offer everythng MODX needs. It’s my first time working with MODX (or indeed any CMS) and so it could be that I’m not aware of things that may seem obvious to thers. (Apologies in advance if this is the case).

Please let me have any or all the ideas you can think of as a way for me to design and build their website and then allow them to update it and add pages.

    Many thanks

    Anni

I personally use 1and1which is shared and have no problems running MODx.

They have various packages, but i think the 2.99 a month would suit you fine in this case. Not sure where they are located though....

edit: i guess they have different options for the US based setups, sorry annii sad

        Thanks for your reply.
Actually I phoned 1and1 in the UK, and was told no chmod 777 at all, no MOD Rewrite and no .htaccess !!
I was really surprised and it was this call that prompted me to post here. Maybe it’s just the UK that are ultra security conscious with their shared hosting. I recently used Webfusion.co.uk for a different setup and found I couldn’t make direct tunnel connections from my office PC to the MSQL database, so I cancelled within the 30 day money back period and had to fight really hard for a full refund.
For that setup, I changed to Hostgator in the US, who have been great, but I don’t know how they are with MODX.
        Keep the suggestions coming guys...

We run a web hosting company using Windows IIS, with servers located in London, UK

          http://www.onesmarthost.co.uk

We also love MODx and our site above runs this using a ISAPI driver for Friendly URL’s.

Regarding CHMOD we have a special command script in FTP which can set files to read only, our starter plan is £34.50 per year and allows you to host multiple domains.

Sorry for the shameless plug people smiley

I use HostGator (US) for our MODx site (http://heav.org). They’ve been very good.
PM me to find out how you can get a FREE ipad 2!

I was recommended Clook by another user on this boardand ended up getting a reseller account with them, they have proved to be absolutely excellent.

              http://www.clook.co.uk/services/shared.php

UK-based servers, very fast and useful support staff (no phone support though) and reasonably cheap. No regrets as yet.

Only downside is no SSH, but they will do any terminal-based stuff for you if you need them to.

No offense, but Titan sounds like a whole lot of money for almost nothing to me...

                    None taken smiley

You pay for service and reliability. 1and1 and others like it are fine until something goes wrong.

                      hi

im on http://www.onesmarthost.co.uk and have been for 4 years - aaron that runs it is a massive fan of modx, so i’m always able to make the most of my modx installations (and beyond, we’ve done some funky stuff with modx just recently).

try a single domain account even - its cheap and will give you an idea of how good their support is..
