HI, I am new to Modx, I have successfully made a couple of sites, but now my latest client wants to be able to log on and edit text on her site through the front end of the website, not through the manager. I have looked at Newspublisher and Frontpage but they don't seem to be what I need - I just want to make an area editable for her. Is there any simple way to do this?

    Thanks in advance..

You might also look at NewsPublisher.

Hi All, just in case I didn't say before - I'm using Modx Revolution. I tried Newspublisher but couldn't get it to work and it didn't seem to be quite what I needed? I just want to be able to specify certain areas on the page as editable through the front end of the site. I couldn't get Upfront to download through the package manager - I put it in the core/packages folder but the package manager couldn't find it. What could be wrong?

Does Newspublisher offer a simple edit text on page function or is it just for creating blogs?

            Thanks

I have used NewsPublisher and it can "just... make an area editable" - there are some limitations but I think one could work around them if the page design/layout was correct. I added NewsPublisher to an existing site some pages were fine others did not work - I had no need to work around the problems so I have not.

I have not checked out UpFront, but unless you're up to fixing things I would be wary of a '0.1 alpha' last updated just over one year ago!
I might still check it out, just be wary and prepared for some coding.

              What is this? Exactly.
But the answer is probably no.

You could also check out Aloha Editor.
I just did a search and found the same person/people that created UpFront also did this:
"AlohaX - a basic front end editor using Aloha for MODX Revolution. It's not well tested, probably very unstable but ready for some feedback and hopefully it get's forked on github smiley"
              See:

              and:

Let us know what you end up doing.

Thanks whistlemaker, this is not good really. This is one of the main things I need from a cms and it doesn't seem like there is a simple option for what I need. Starting to think that Modx was the wrong decision. I have spent far too much time on what should have been a very simple website because of it.

I am not happy about using something 'unstable' for a client. I would really appreciate some advice on how to use Newspublisher as I couldn't get very far with it!

Can you explain the problems you had with NewsPublisher? A number of people are using it successfully.

Did you see the tutorial here: http://bobsguides.com/newspublisher-tutorial.html?

I found it pretty simple - however I just installed it and have not used it very much or explored permissions etc., since I have been doing all the editing on the site, not my client.

There is a tutorial here: http://bobsguides.com/newspublisher-tutorial.html

                      In a nutshell:
create an unpublished resource called NewsPublisher with a single tag in its content - tag is
                      [[!NewPublisher]]

Then in your template somewhere in the body add the following tag
                      [[!NpEditThisButton? &debug=`1`]]
Once you have figured things out you will set debug to 0. With debug = 1 the edit button will always show which helps debug permission issues (it will tell you if it would be hidden and why)

                      Pretty simple...

set up this way it will however not permit one to edit anything if the content section contains any modx tags, probably a good idea I think. This can be changed - read Bob's tutorial. Its probably a good thing to not have modx tags in the content section if it is to edited by people with limited knowledge or training.
