I’m hoping someone can suggest something here before I go over the edge. sad

I’m trying to port a working MODx site to my local computer.

I run XAMPP on Windows XP and it’s always worked fine.

    MODx 0.9.5
    XAMPP 1.5.1
    Php 5.1.1
    MySQL 5.0.18
    Apache 2.2.0

I ran the MODx install 0.9.5 (same as on the remote server) in the XAMPP environment and everything went fine.

I exported the all the tables from the remote DB, emptied the local tables using phpMyAdmin, and uploaded the sql file into the local DB. Then I FTPd the Assets to the local machine.

    Here’s where things get weird.

I can log on to the manager fine with http://localhost/mydir/manager. The whole site is there and I can edit the configuration (and save it). I can even (sometimes) edit individual pages.

As soon as I try to preview a page, though. I get a new blank browser window and a progress bar that doesn’t move. From that point on, Apache seems to be hosed. I can’t do anything in the manager and can’t even log out. I also can’t access any of the other non-MODx sites on my machine via localhost or load the XAMPP manager, even if I close the MODx manager.

The same freeze happens if I go to http://localhost/mydir.

If I restart Apache, I can start over and go to the manager or visit any of the other local sites but as soon as I try to load that home page (or any other individual page), I’m done for.

There are no clues in the Apache logs -- no errors in the event log and just the accesses to the manager pages in the access log.

I turned off friendly URLs and tried every possible combination of stuff in the .htaccess file (including no .htaccess file).

At one point, I did see lines in the Apache access log with: GET /myhomedir HTTP/1.1" 301 368
    but that no longer happens.

I’m running out of stuff to try.

    Bob

Do you have the Template Switcher plugin installed (if so, delete it).

Once you load the tables, re-run the installer in upgrade mode.

            Curioser and curioser...

            I created a minimal
            <p>hello world</p>
            <?php echo "hello php"; ?>

page in the manager and designated it as the home page of the site -- browser still hangs and hoses Apache when I preview in the manager or go to http://localhost/mydir.

If, however, I replace the site root’s index.php with a minimal index.php file, everything is fine.
I can view it from any browser with http://localhost/mydir or I can see it from preview in the manager.

            I can call it index.php, index.htm, or index.html -- all work fine.

I think this tells me that the problem is in the original index.php, which I’m almost positive is the standard unmodified file MODx installs (or in something that page calls or includes). It must be something that isn’t processed in logging on to the manager. Any ideas?

I’ll start hacking away at index.php but it would be nice to have some clues before I start.

I’ve honestly never seen behavior like that ... and Jason also uses XAMPP for development and likewise has never reported that type of issue. I suspect something’s off. Grab the latest SVN trunk and give that a whirl.

With 0.9.5, you don’t have to install it, it gets installed as part of the basic installation unless you specifically clear its checkbox on installation.

index.php indeed proceses everything that is seen on the public side of the site, so the manager doesn’t access it unless you’re viewing a preview. But that doesn’t narrow the problem down to index.php, however. Any and all code (content, plugins, snippets, etc.) that you use for your site is processed through index.php, so it’s probably just the messenger here.

Any bets on TemplateSwitcher and or DisableCache plugin being the source of the problem?
