After a few dodgy days of working with modx, i checked out the backup feature.

it only talks about saving databse tables...whats that about?

Instead i downloaded the entire directory of my site, including all the files, so if something went wrong i could load them all on and overwrite?

If someone coulds clarify how this works my mind would be settled.

You have to understand that with a CMS, content is generally stored in a database and not the filesystem. Actually, that’s the whole point of dynamic web pages, have the content stored appart from the html code. That’s called separation of content and presentation. Content is stored in the DB and presentation is built with the html templates and css.

The answer is therefore, no : you have to backup your DB to be able to restore the content in the case of data loss. Backing up your files is also a good idea since your images, installed plugins, module or snippets are stored there, as well as your css (a good tip is to save the whole /assets/ directory). Another item for which it’s handy to have a backup is your config.inc.php file.

You could also try the Modbak module - see:

        http://www.modxcms.com/Modbak-780.html

it will zip your assets and manager folders as well as your DB and put them in the directory of your choosing.
