I just run into this article
http://cmsreport.com/content/2011/09/silverstripe-framework-will-stand-alone and I believe that this is a really smart move by SilverStripe (
http://www.silverstripe.org/framework-introduction/ ). Personally, I would love to see MODX take this route as well for a couple of reasons:
1. It shouldn't be too much trouble to do it (I hope so)
2. We would attract more "hard core" developers
3. To be honest, i don't like this paradigm cms/framework/platform all in one (kinda sounds stretched, although it mostly is not)
...
What do you think?

To be honest, the MODX 2.x core is already an isolated framework. The manager and connectors use this framework to build the default Manager UI which ships with the product, as do the front-end Snippets, Plugins, etc. you use on a regular basis.

I am aware of that, I use it as a framework. I just think that we would benefit a lot in a marketing sense - IMHO developers would love to have "pure framework". In all those lists of best frameworks this and best frameworks that, MODX would easily be at top and that would bring us a lot of new people. I just think that branding of this kind (cms/framework/platform...) just confuses a lot newcomers and even puts of php gurus.
Again, I am not a marketing expert, but MODX Framework just sounds good to me. I don't think that people from SilverStripe did separation for no reason.

Agreed; marketing the framework separately could definitely have some benefits and is something that was intended from the beginning with MODX Revolution. Attracting more PHP developers is an absolute priority, so I imagine you will see a lot more in this regard over the coming months.
