Having one of those bad MODX days :O(

Installed 2.2. nightly which completely wigged out.
Decided I was being too brave and am trying to do a fresh install on same web space with 2.1.5 and new database.

Visiting domain.com/setup gives me a Error 500 page

At this stage I've uploaded the files 4 times. That takes hours with my broadband speed sad
    Just having a rant.

500 error on setup is weird... sounds like a pre 2.1 issue where config paths had to be carefully hardcoded.

Have you tried clearing out all files, uploading a zipped install file and decompressing on server? I've been bitten by incomplete uploads/missing files/other stupid DW errors using Dreamweaver FTP, so now I always upload complete zip and decompress.

I never thought of uploading the ZIP file and unpacking on the server. Thanks for the tip.
I notice that I have to download, unpack, repack and then upload. Otherwise, unpacking on the server unpacks the contents into a sub folder.

Anyway, I have gotten past the 500 error and have connected to my database. Have cleared all checks but get to a blank white page when clicking the final install button.

I'm going to leave it for a few days. At this stage, I've wasted over 8 hours trying to get it to work.
I have several installs on the same host that all installed beautifully.

Inicdentally, the host has safe_mode switched off and memory is set to 128MB

I just use the domain control panel's file manager to select and move all of the unpacked files/folders and move them to the root, then delete the empty unpacking folder. I wouldn't be happy if it came packed without being in a folder since I frequently install in subdomains for development and simply unpacking gives me my subdirectory installation!
