This is something I've been thinking about for some time; does anyone have any techniques for wrapping up a "theme", a group of MODX elements such as chunks, snippets, templates and TVs and also some JavaScript files, CSS files and theme images on the server.

Ideally it would be best if this could be achieved similarly to how WordPress handles themes, in a nicely contained folder and section in the back-end, which can be switch on or off and easily interchanged with other themes.

If anyone know of a plugin or a forum thread which covers this please ket me know smiley

You're thinking for organizing them or transporting them?

Mainly transporting them, updating them (versioning), and containing them.

Just been thinking some more about this, if a Package were to be used (installed via the Package Manager), am I correct in thinking every time a new themes package is installed everything else would be overwritten? Which wouldn't be ideal for quickly changing between a handful of themes.

Can a Package even include Templates, add files such as /assets/themes/theme-name/css/styles.css to the file system or other add-ons such as Articles or WayFinder?

You can use Packages to distribute templates, but the flaw as noted, updating them will overwrite any changes unless the user duplicates and renames them.

You can include items from the file system. Package dependencies are coming, you could look at Articles to see if he packaged all the addons or magically got dependencies working.
