My favorite file uploader is the jQuery Uploadify plugin; it uses Flash for the progress bar and allows for multiple file uploads. http://www.uploadify.com/

Progress bars on a file upload are awkward in PHP since PHP doesn't have any mechanism for monitoring the upload process; it only deals with the file once it's fully uploaded to a temporary location.

You can also use an HTML5 solution with fallback to Flash for older browsers.
I know of two librairies who does that:
        valum fileuploader and plupload.
Only Plupload provide a flash fallback for older browsers (allowing progress bars to work even with them) if needed.
