In the box on the left that has the tabs 'Resources' 'Elements' 'Files', I am unable to access the elements because it says Access Denied. I have tried clearing all caches (including my browser cache) and nothing seems to work.

Have you added Access Permissions to the Categories in which the Elements you are trying to access appear?
I'm an absolute beginner at MODx, I loaded it to my server yesterday. I'm not sure what you are talking about...
The Access Denied message has been displaying intermittently.
