I have been mucking about in 2.2 tonight and I saw something you might want to consider, especially if your installation is still under development and you want to upgrade MODX.... ever?? I noticed that these settings you're working with are depreciated in 2.2 (yet remain editable, for now), and that you will want to use Media Sources instead.
Maybe you want to save some time messing with this, and instead tackle 2.2 and Media Sources?

In 2.2.x you can now set the workspace path to {core_path} or any setting that ends in _path. This is also the default for new installs.

MODX will attempt to create new Media Sources for any filemanager_* settings and any custom image/file TVs that had a custom basePath.
