Well guys, still in chapter 2 of MODx Official Guide (no laughing please) smiley. Seems I'm constantly running into issues, so here's the latest. Part of the instructions "Building the Transport Package" requires 2 things:

    1. Edit the last four lines in build.config.php to reflect current database and login info (DONE!)

    2. Within that same directory, execute the file transport.core.php (NOT DONE & MY DELIMA)

First of all, I'm not sure how to execute a php file (well not sure is an understatement, I don't have a clue).

I tried using some of the commands outlined in the book, but none seems to be working. Now when it mentions command line, I'm assuming it's talking about the command line within the github utility.

Can someone shed some light on this for me please? If anyone has access to the official guide, i'm stuck on page 87.

Let me say up front, with no offense intended, that if you don't know how to execute a PHP file, you might not want to be using the development version of MODX at all. The development version is mainly for people who want the "bleeding edge" version of MODX in order to contribute to the project by testing it and reporting bugs.

IIRC, you've already installed one of the stable versions of MODX and you could certainly work with that for the rest of the book (in fact, that version is more likely to match the Manager examples in the book).

That said, there are several ways to execute that file. For all three, you'll have to have installed a local Apache server and PHP package like XAMPP.

You might be able to just double-click on the transport.core.php file to run it (possibly browsing to the php.exe file (which might be in the c:\xampp\php\ directory) when asked what program to use to run it).

Another method is to find the php.exe file in your local install of XAMPP or some other Apache server, and run it from your computer's command line (nothing to do with GitHub) using the full path to the .php file as an argument, something like this (I'm guessing at the paths):

      c:\xampp\php\php.exe c:\xampp\htdocs\mymodxsite\_build\transport.core.php

Another way (this is how I do it) would be to install a code editor like NetBeans, PhpEd, or PhpStorm, tell the editor where the php.exe file is (a configuration option), and then load the transport.core.php file in the editor and select "run" on the editor's menu.

      Hope this helps. smiley

Hey Bob, no offense taken. I was only going through the book step by step to be sure I grasped all that was being offered.

Not experienced with MODx enough to know what to use, and when to bypass and move on to the next subject. Just trying to avoid reaching chapter 10 for example, only to realize I need to go back to chapter 2 that I neglected to go over.

Whew! what a relief to know I don't have to pause to go and learn php. Got my hands full enough with MODx, HTML5, CSS3.

I will use the examples mentioned to execute the php file, just for the sake of saying that I did it. But I will also take your advice and just concentrate on the local version of MODx I got up and running, and move on to the good stuff. smiley
