First off, the MODX team has done a great job and anyone let me know if my plan is illegal, but from what I gather it is not.

I’d like to make my own Distribution of MODX, focusing on media and blogs, I’m wondering how best to go about building a custom install file or what is all involved, or can I somehow archive an install? and unpack it?

It should be no problem. Just set up a site exactly the way you want, with a bit of demo content, then backup the site and the database. You could even write a script to automate loading up the new database with the backup sql file. If you’re really ambitious, the script could also unzip the backup archive, instead of having to unzip it locally and upload all the parts.

MODx is GPL, so all you have to do is maintain the attributions in the files, as well as the references to the licenses. It would be good if you included a copy of the GPL in the zip archive.
