migrated to 1.0.5 - image thumbs corrupt

just have gone from 0.9.6 to 1.0.5 on a number of sites. went well except that image thumbnails in fck image editor are now corrupt. they show up as broken files in the image browser. the actual images are ok. deleted the thumbs and when they are re-created, they are again corrupt. did not copy over /manager for the upgrade. removed and uploaded new.

found a post that had found a potential issue . . . "a 3-byte Byte-Order-Mark (BOM) was passed through to the output of the generated image preview file." not sure what this means and does it apply if i have a fresh upgrade to 1.0.5? full thread at: https://forums.modx.com/thread/?thread=31850&i=1&page=5

bottom line, is there a fix available in terms that a humble designer can understand?

appreciate any help as i have 4 or 5 sites that i had to upgrade that have this issue.

It sounds like something didn't fully upgrade, or there is a server setting that might be off. Can you tell us more about your hosting?

Also what changed with the hosting? I'm guessing php 5.2.x > 5.3.x?

my accounts are in a shared hosting environment. linux server. current php is 5.3.6. tech support has not been forthcoming with what the upgrade was. but, i suspect from 5.2.x.

upgraded 4 installations and all have issues with the thumbs. all installations were 0.9.6.x

when i reinstalled, i renamed /manager before uploading the upgrade files. tried both upgrading all snippets/plugins and few plugins with same result. all these sites are fairly basic and are only using wayfinder, tinymce, edit function, etc.

the reason i upgraded was that each site was getting a php error:
