I have a site thats about to grow rapidly and I think now is the best time to move it to MODX.

My main concern though is giving the Marketing Manager and team members access to pages which are in progress but should not be 'live' to the general public until approved. I'm referring to workflow here after the site has gone live by the way.

IE how would they sign off on a page that is
--being worked on but should not be 'live' and viewable by everyone else
--being worked on and should not be indexed yet by search engines
--being worked on and should not show p in simplesearch or the site map snppet.

I have a hunch that I need to create a specific type of permission for her, that she could then
login somehow, preview the site/pages and then allow me to 'publish' them to the live site.

I guess that's one challenge in itself

But whats the best way to update an existing page, save it and have it ready for signoff without it being made live.

Normally, my client would goto a test domain or subdomain where they can view changes before we push them to the live server. It's a very simple system that works very well.

If I'm understanding you, all you should need to do is change the configuration or system settings to make new documents unpublished by default, then deny the user the right to publish documents.

How you do that depends on which version of MODX you are using.

Thanks Bob.

I don't want to give them access to the 'back-end' of modx as such or present them with the editor. But I do want them to be able to use a browser and see pages and sections on the navigation that non logged in people cannot see. Presumably these pages would be created and saved but not published until they are viewed and approved by the Marketing Team

Does that clarify?

Yes, but it still depends on which version of MODX you are using. Is it a secret? wink

You can give front-end users view_unpublished permission. I don't know whether that would make Wayfinder or getResources show them -- probably not -- however you could create a page with links to them (viewable only by the marketing people) and the links on the page would work only for those logged-in users.

You could also create a page of links to just the unpublished resources. It might be possible with getResources, otherwise a custom snippet like this would do it (untested):

<?php
$docs = $modx->getCollection('modResource', array('published'=>'0'));

$output = '
';
foreach ($docs as $doc) {
$output .= "\n    " .  '<a href = "[[~' . $doc->get('id') . '' . $doc->get('pagetitle') . '';
}

$output .= "\n" .  '
';

return $output;

The links should work for you when previewing from the Manager (as admin Super User you have view_unpublished permission).

You'd have to use Context Access ACL entries with a context of 'web' for the other users and a policy with view_unpublished enabled.
