Can I do this in Modx? (or should I turn to Drupal?)

Currently I mostly deploy sites in Wordpress especially the new Wordpress which finally satisfies certain requirements (post types, taxonomy). I've been fishing around Drupal for some years, hoping I'd find the time to learn it or that it would improve and become user friendly enough for someone like me. That day has not arrived and Drupal 7 is a mess when you consider that their nearly mandatory modules are still buggy. So I'm looking at ModX for a project.

Let me describe the project and let me know if this sounds like something I can achieve in ModX:

1. Public registration with limited privileges
2. Registered users can create their own content of a specific content type
3. User profiles
4. Different roles and permissions for users granted by me (or editors, admins)
5. Integrate Soundcloud (is there already a plugin/module/extension for soundcloud with ModX)?

This is similar to a multi-blog set up but there will be no blogging. Users will submit Soundcloud links. Can this be done in ModX? Easily? With some effort? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance

The answer to "Would you do this in MODX or Drupal?" is MODX, but then that is expected considering this is a MODX forum. And yes I have used Drupal - not version 7, but it sounds like that is not ready for primetime yet - and much prefer MODX

depends on the details, and who is doing the work (and their skill set) and their definition of 'easily'.

I will say that user permissions/privileges/roles do seem to give problems to some, the system is flexible but requires some effort to understand. So on that basis it will probably not be easy - but then any flexible role/permission/privilege system ends up not being easy

And finally

Integrate Soundcloud

I've never played with "integrating Soundcloud" so can't help you out there and for that matter "integrating" is a very open ended term which would have to be defined a bit before you could get an answer.

I guess I don't know what I mean by "integrate" soundcloud. I suppose the issue is that a Soundcloud Connect module has not been updated in Drupal. I'm realizing that I will need to work with the API and figure it out myself.

"Easily"? Another good point. Not sure what easy is. In which case, can you describe to me how one goes about setting up permissions and roles within ModX? Is it built in? Are there extensions?

After you read the links above and understand the basics of MODX security, these tutorials might give you an idea of how easy or difficult it is to do what you want. It can definitely be done in MODX.
