I have to say that I love modx. I am not a professional web developer but I have been able to quickly build high quality web sites that customers love as part of my marketing services.
I would like to add a forum and helpdesk ticketing system to one of these web sites. The login in system can be separate to the modx system
Do you have any recommendations on software that is easy to integrate?

If you don't mind setting up separate logins (i.e. separate applications), then you may want to look at Unfuddle as a ticket system (it's a hosted solution, but very clean... you have to pay after a certain # of users). Discuss is a great forum software... you can also look at phpBB -- it's popular.
